For app reviewers
Press Play Again: review pack
Press Play Again comes with no games and no system software: people add their own. This pack has what a reviewer needs to switch on the ZX Spectrum and play two games, all of it free to pass on.
A zip file, about 100 KB. Open this page on the phone or tablet the app is on.
What's in it
| Folder | What it is |
|---|---|
| System files | opense.rom: OpenSE BASIC 3.07, free system software for the ZX Spectrum. The Spectrum won't switch on without it. |
| Games | Miner (1983) and Zap Attack (1984), two ZX Spectrum games by David Hembrow. |
| OpenSE BASIC licence and source | The licence the system software comes under, and its source code. |
How to use it
- Download and unzip. Tap the button above. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Files app, go to Downloads and tap the zip: a folder called "Press Play Again review pack" appears beside it. On Android, open the Files app, go to Downloads, tap the zip and choose Extract.
- Give the Spectrum its system software. In Press Play Again, on Home, tap ZX Spectrum. Scroll to System files, tap Choose folder, and choose the pack's "System files" folder. (Or tap Pick files and choose opense.rom.)
- Add the games. Tap the Shelf tab, tap Choose folder, and choose the pack's "Games" folder.
- Play. Tap Miner or Zap Attack on the shelf.
Good to know. Three games on each computer are free, and these are two of them. The subscription is offered from Settings (the cog on Home), and whenever something that needs it is tried.
The app's other computers stay empty: each needs its own system software, which isn't in this pack.
On Miner's instructions page the large title is drawn as scrambled blocks. That's a difference between this free system software and Sinclair's; the game itself plays as it should.
Credits and licences
Miner and Zap Attack are by David Hembrow, who offers them free to play and to share at hembrow.eu/spectrum.
OpenSE BASIC 3.07 is by Andrew Owen. It is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later, and comes with no warranty. The licence and the complete source code are inside the pack; the project is at sourceforge.net/projects/sebasic.
